Once you’ve made it inside, you’re basically in a Peaky Blinders episode. 1920s jazz circulates throughout the dark space. A warm, soft glow from pineapple lamps and a flickering fireplace provide just enough lighting to accentuate ornate paintings that look like the result of a very successful estate sale shopping spree.

‘Top Chef’ Calls Upon Two More Chicago Chefs

And once you’re on the list, you can go out and have a drink somewhere in the neighborhood and we will reach out and try to get you back in so you can enjoy a beautiful experience with us. It’s comfortable and cozy, but it still has a lot of energy and there’s lots of movement. There are guests at the door trying to add their names, there’s a full bar, there’s the sound of conversations filling the room, and the chef calling out orders — which I personally love. I feel like if you’re going to go out, you might as well go big. Armitage Alehouse also offers French and American wines, beers and spirits. Dishes range from starters like matzo ball soup to seafoods, curries, pasta, steaks and burgers.

Tried out Armitage Alehouse while visiting a friend who lives in Chicago. Def check them out if you can get a reservation early enough in advance! I've been dying to go to Armitage and finally managed to snag a reservation for brunch. The ambience of the place was great - very reminiscent of a British... Armitage Alehouse is a trip back in time...and just a trip. And yet, even with all these points, I still can’t think of many other rooms I’d rather spend an evening in.

Still, the menu’s price points are enough to make you wince sometimes—it’s hard to justify springing for a side of $9 fries, or $13 broccoli dressed simply in butter, oil and lemon. And while we devoured an order of pillowy, stone-fired naan, the assortment of chutneys and spreads for dipping will cost you $3 a pop, so choose your options wisely. Lincoln Park’s Armitage Alehouse has one of the headiest vibes in a town full of heady vibes, nailing the sweet spot between the familiar and the unexpected. Opened by the Hogsalt hospitality team (Bavette’s, Au Cheval), this old-world gastropub exudes luxury while still feeling intimate and cozy. And while relatively new to the block, Armitage Alehouse seems like it’s always been there — and like it’s always impossible to get into. Just come in as early as you can and add your name to the waitlist if you don’t have a reservation.

Hogsalt wants the interiors at its bar, full of natural woods under dim lighting, to remind diners of London in the 1920s. Taking inspiration for British pub culture, the restaurant veers from Chicago’s craft beer scene attempting to curate its own collection of Old World-style beers. Guinness and Harp headline; black & tans are even listed on the menu.

I have bad Armitage Ale House for dinner but hadn't tried it for brunch and I was not disappointed! Aside from the food, one thing this place nails is ambiance and service. Was able to score a reservation here for a friends birthday for a table for 4. I have been dying to go here since it opened and finally got a reservation on Sunday night.

How to Get Into Armitage Alehouse, Lincoln Park’s Poshest Pub

Instead, they gave rote answers to questions I never asked. I still don’t know if there is an executive chef. With its latest project, Armitage Alehouse, the Hogsalt team aims to transport you to a fictional London pub circa 1926. Our newsletter hand-delivers the best bits to your inbox.

No matter which table you are sitting at, you won’t feel like you’re sitting at a bad table. Anglo-Indian food is a genre that’s confusing to many Americans. It was born out of the 190-year British occupation of India. Colonists ordered servants to mix cuisines to give subjects — from dignitaries to soldiers — living in India something that more reminded them of home.

Wagyu Cheeseburger

The team behind downtown spots like Bavette’s, Ciccio Mio, and Trivoli Tavern is exceptionally good at copy and pasting. Step into any of their restaurants and you’ll notice the same dim lighting, antique decor, attentive service, and occasionally even the same dishes. The worst offender is chicken tikka masala ($20), which tastes like limp poached chicken tenders in a barely spiced tomato sauce.

But hype and covetable antiques can only go so far. Could people be flocking here for the food, too? That’s not to say that you’ll leave disappointed with your meal, but it’s difficult to pinpoint any single dish among the menu’s selection of elevated pub fare that makes Armitage Alehouse a culinary destination. London-style curries, like the chicken tikka masala, are hearty but favor the Brits’ conservative approach to spice. I think that our concept is pretty unique compared to everything else in Lincoln Park. Armitage Alehouse at its core is meant to be a fun pub that’s accessible and open to everyone.

Sign up for our email to enjoy Chicago without spending a thing (as well as some options when you’re feeling flush). Resy powers the world’s best restaurants, using technology to imagine the future of hospitality. Also, you do have to be present to add your name to the waitlist. You can go and enjoy a drink somewhere in the neighborhood until we contact you, but we do need to have a response within 10 minutes once we’ve texted. Armitage Alehouse is Hogsalt’s ninth restaurant in the city, following places including Aster Hall, Green Street Smoked Meats and Small Cheval.

Those looking for a flawlessly faithful English pub will find plenty to quibble about, but give in and you can leave behind the reality of, say, Chicago in the grips of a gray winter, and venture into a fictional world. A phone interview was denied, as was our usual request to send a Tribune photographer, which explains the subpar iPhone photos here. I thought we agreed to an email interview, but then he or someone from his organization mostly ignored my questions.

The British influence pops up once more with the classic fish and chips. But for those not interested in the motif, curried chickpeas can be passed over for items like cacio e pepe carbonara, a wagyu burger, or a dry-aged New York strip steak. Whether it’s oxtail and red wine, steak and ale, or classic chicken and gravy, any of their rotating pies are rich and delicious.

Armitage Alehouse Review Lincoln Park Chicago

armitage ale house

We recommend creating your Resy profile before reservations are released for your preferred date. The first Miller’s Ale House opened in 1988 in Jupiter, Florida, as a local place to be enjoyed by all walks of life. We are a sports-themed casual dining restaurant with a wide variety of entrees for a great value.

The Duck Inn in Bridgeport Nails the Neighborhood Restaurant

It’s a simple combination of pecorino romano and truffle, but its balanced richness and creaminess makes this a must order to share, or better yet, as a personal entree. From “fresh and flavorful” to “mushy and questionable”, the quality of steak tartare is extremely important not just for taste, but to avoid an unwanted, pricey trip to the hospital. Luckily, the steak tartare here is fantastic—with a light salty and peppery taste, a creamy yolk, umami-packed anchovy mayo, and thick pieces of warm bread. Though using the bread to make a tartare sandwich might feel a bit unhinged, you won’t regret it.

The Ultimate Resy Guide to Chicago Brunch

Each one has a buttery crust with a marrow bone baked in the center—an impressive marvel of pot pie design—plus a silky bed of mashed potatoes that you wish was sold in adult human size at Bed Bath and Beyond. In Lincoln Park, Armitage Alehouse captures the vibe of a London pub with a wood-burning fireplace, a piano player, and select ales and cocktails. The website says Armitage Alehouse serves “hearty pub fare and dishes with their roots in India.” Anyone who has lived in London knows that’s a common combo. The oddball menu also lists a chopped wedge salad ($19), glazed black cod with a sweet miso glaze ($43) and matzo ball soup ($13).

A night out at one of these restaurants will never be boring. Yes, this is basically the same burger that you can find at Au Cheval, Gilt Bar, Bavette’s, etc. Two thin, fantastically griddled wagyu patties, American cheese, crisp pickles and onions, and a creamy and tangy dijonaise all come together to form the platonic ideal of a burger—this isn’t an exaggeration, it’s a fact. View a list of stores and their offerings, or search below. My friend and I arrived at about 5 pm on a regular Saturday. The hostess was incredibly friendly and took our name, because, of...

As with all of the Hog Salt restaurants in the group - it's incredible. The atmosphere is cozy and dark but still lively. In addition to a fine wine list, there are, no surprise, some excellent ales, including Fuller's Champion Ale, an extra special bitter and Guiness Draft Nitro. On the menu are the expected -- and beautifully prepared -- Pike Fish and Chips as well as the English Cut Prime Rib Sandwich...and a whole lot of food from the Indian subcontinent. Sticking to the traditional English dishes provides firmer footing, even though I wish the crust on the pike fish and chips ($27) wasn’t so heavy.

Stonefired Naan Bread With Lamb Spread

But we haven’t seen a lot of success with that because guests who don’t get notified by the day make other plans. You can’t go wrong with the curries, especially the chicken curry. And I would say our wagyu cheeseburger is probably one of our most popular dishes. It’s a pressed burger with American Cheddar cheese served with French fries.

Walk through the front door, and you’re no longer on a sleepy corner of Lincoln Park, but a bustling London corridor. The decor looks like it’s been around for nearly a hundred years, but meticulously maintained. Polished antiques sit in every nook and cranny, including a towering metal coffee maker that bounces light across the room. Though packed with guests and servers rushing around, the room maintains an intimate, hushed vibe, with the music just loud enough to hear, yet never overbearing. The most sought-after table is the one in front of the fireplace, which is where the owner sits when he’s here. Otherwise, the layout of the restaurant is very inviting.

Reservations regularly disappear weeks in advance. I was only able to visit by showing up before 5 p.m. And sitting at the bar, where the seats are first come, first served. So why are people electing to wait around in a Chicago winter—or frantically refresh Resy every morning—to eat at Armitage Alehouse? It’s very classic and consistent, and consistency is one the values of the group.

One of our guests sent us feedback on Resy once and said that what they liked the most during their experience was seeing how much the staff enjoyed being here and were having a good time on the floor, in a professional way of course. We will make note of a guest’s preference and we will try our best to accommodate. But it really depends on how long guests are there beforehand, or if people are running slightly late. We do move things around to try and accommodate guests’ wishes and of course do our best to make them happy.

Armitage Alehouse, the new gastropub from the owners of Au Cheval, is open in Lincoln Park and the menu isn’t orthodox by fusing a dash of Anglo-Indian cuisine with Chicago’s love for chops and burgers. At another restaurant, seeing only one pasta dish on the menu is probably a red flag that makes you immediately turn the page. But here, the only reason why you should be on alert is because the truffle bucatini is excellent.

There’s also an espresso martini on the drink list along with a half-dozen signature cocktails. Brendan Sodikoff doesn’t create restaurants; he fashions escapes from reality. Give this one another couple months before rushing to log onto Resy every day, unless you're a diehard Anglophile who can't resist a proper pint and a pie. Given all of this, it’s not surprising that reservations get snatched up within minutes. Luckily, our ongoing series The One Who Keeps The Books provides insider knowledge for Chicago’s most sought-after restaurants. Here to assist on this newest edition is Armitage Ale House general manager Corina Hanc, who shares the tips and tricks on how to get a table or bar seat, what to order, and what to expect once you’re inside this time-warped paradise.
